When you’re a renter, it’s not easy to make your apartment feel like home. Renters tend to move around a lot once their lease is up. However, there are many things you can do to your space to make it feel cozy and homey.

Love what you Have.

Bring pieces into your home that you love. When you have furniture you love, you’re making an investment. These are pieces you will carry with you, whether it’s to your next rental space or your first home.

For small spaces, purchase items that are transitional. If you move around a lot, it’s hard to decorate each new space. With neutral colors for your larger furniture pieces, you can add pops of colors using pillows, throws, and rugs. Your rug may be perfect for the space you currently reside, but if your next space is smaller you can cut the rug down to fit. Curtains are another great way to add color. For shorter windows you can hem them, for longer windows you can undo the hem.

Decorate your Walls.

Often times, rental spaces have very natural colored walls. This can prevent your space from feeling like home. Have a conversation with your landlord to see if you can paint your space. Often times, they will let you as long as you paint it back before moving out.

If you don’t want to worry about painting your walls back, peel-and-stick wall art is one of the easiest things you can do. These stickers come in many designs and patterns. You can also purchase letters if you want to spell things out.

Another way to decorate your walls is with pictures and art. Hanging personal pictures helps make the space feel like yours. Nail holes are easy to fill. Or, you can buy 3M Command Strips. These don’t leave any marks on your walls and are easy to put up and take down.

Light up your Space.

Replacing the lightbulbs in your rental space not only can help you cut down on electricity, but buying low wattage bulbs can help create an intimate glow. For any lamps you have, replace the shade with something fun that you enjoy.

You can replace fixtures on your ceiling with something more your style. Safely store the rental fixtures somewhere safe so you can put them back when you move out.

For areas that don’t get a lot of light, you can buy a tall lampshade, or a hanging light fixture that plugs in.

With these easy decorating tips, your rental space will soon feel like home. It’s style and character will reflect who you are, and it will feel more like your home.
