Keep Your Home Cool This Summer Michigan

Keeping your home cool during the hot summer months can really add up. Thankfully, there are some energy-efficient things you can do to keep your Michigan home cool and your pockets more full.

1. Energy Efficient System

If you’re looking to update the A/C in your home, look for a cooling system that has an ENERGY STAR rating. ENERGY STAR products help save money and protect the environment. In the event you’re not looking to update you’re A/C unit, have it professionally inspected and cleaned, making sure it’s working at peak perfection.

2. Filter Change

Changing your furnace filter every 3 months helps keeps it working at its best. Checking for leaks in your air ducts and making sure they aren’t blocked by furniture, appliances, or other objects helps keeps your home cool.

3. Insulation

Insulating your attic is an easy and inexpensive way to keep your home cool. Check and see if you need to insulate your walls as well.

4. Block The Sunshine

The sun creates a lot of heat. Keeping windows shades and draperies closed keeps the sunshine out, especially on east, south, and west windows. To help create a block on the outside of your home, you can add overhangs, awnings, shade screens, bushes, and trees.

5. Open Windows

What’s better than fresh air? Open the windows for cross-ventilation, especially at night when it’s not as hot. You keep cool and most certainly keep your bill down by not running your A/C.

6. Ceiling Fans

Make sure you’re not running ventilation fans like you find in the kitchen or bathroom. These can pull cool air out. Using ceiling fans provides a cool breeze and keeps the air flow moving. Check with your manufacturer that you have the blades spinning in the right direction to push the cool air down.

7. Adjust Your Thermostats

To save energy and money, adjusting the thermostat can make a large difference in your bill. Keep your thermostat at 76 degrees or higher when people are home. When no one is home, or when you’re sleeping at night and the temperatures are cooler, you can bump up the degrees by a few.  For every degree higher, you also save energy.
